Rated a two-star recruit by Rivals.com, Pat Wertz is from Orland Hills, IL and went to Andrew High School. Wertz was a First-Team Class 8A All-State selection, a Two-Time All-Conference and All-Area selection, and was South West Suburban Conference Player of the Year his senior year. After being redshirted at Illinois State in 2010, Wertz transferred to Eastern Illinois. In 2011, during his junior year, Wertz played in 11 games and tallied 21 tackles, four for a loss, had one sack against Austin Peay, and an interception returned for 16 yards.His 2012 senior year was a great year for Wertz. He started in 12 games at defensive end and finished the year with 53 tackles (22 solo), had 8.5 tackles for loss, recorded three sacks with one each against Southern Illinois, Illinois State and South Dakota State, he had three forced fumbles with two against Jacksonville State, and a blocked kick against JSU. Wertz received Second Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors for his efforts and was granted a sixth year of eligibility by NCAA during the 2012 season. This past season, Wertz was named to the 2013 All-Ohio Valley Conference preseason team. He played in 14 games with 38 tackles, 10.5 recorded for a loss, led the team in sacks with 6.5, broke up 5 passes, recovered 5 fumbles, had 2 forced fumbles, and 1 blocked kick.
