Every year there are hundreds of people that follow the wheat harvest from the Texas/Oklahoma border all the way to North Dakota. In the summer of 2013 I worked with the Schemper family as we traveled from Davidson, Oklahoma all the way to Langdon, North Dakota cutting wheat for several farmers in many different towns along the harvest run. In the summer of 2013 I worked with the Schemper family as we traveled from Davidson, Oklahoma all the way to Langdon, North Dakota cutting wheat for several farmers in many different towns along the harvest run. In that time we made many stops throughout the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Once we finished up wheat harvest in Langdon, North Dakota we made the long haul back to Holdrege, Nebraska, where we left before starting harvest and also where the Schemper family is from. In Nebraska we picked corn and cut soybeans for various farmers in the Holdrege and South Central Nebraska area. Throughout working for the Schempers I learned an incredible amount of knowledge about a custom harvesting operation and about commercial farm operations in general. I got to be a part of every side of the business and operation of all equipment from truck driving, tractor/grain cart operation, and combine operation. Throughout middle and high school I ran my own lawn care business around Ashburn, Virgina. What started out as a couple of people helping the 11 year old kid down the street turned into about 10 full time weekly customers and a lot more on the side jobs by the time I was a Senior in high school. I did everything from the basic lawn cutting services to digging garden beds and spreading mulch. Served residents dinner in the restaurant by taking orders, delivering drinks and food and busing tables after dinner was served. I learned patience and how to work well with a team in order to get the task at hand done and have a smooth dinner service
