I support an org of ~50 engineers, spread over 15 teams, as the Program Tech Lead for European ePrivacy Directive Data Infrastructure compliance. I serve as a tech lead of tech leads, helping the initiative through discovering work and direction, guiding the tech leads through defining requirements, and reviewing the roadmaps they propose through which their teams will meet those requirements. To this end I drive the technical direction for a cross functional group including data engineers, software engineers, technical program managers and others, defining the direction of work. Together our team has delivered a working prototype of privacy aware infrastructure providing purpose policy enforcement to protect user data, and are scaling it up to cover thousands of data assets of different types, spread across Meta. As the general technical lead for Transparent Data Flows, I drive the technical direction and roadmap for an organization of 30, spread over 5 teams, as we solve the problem of making sure Facebook knows for certain what data goes where. I own the problems of stakeholder alignment, architecture and project roadmapping, cross functional communications, goal setting and metrics definition, engineering alignment, and engineering delivery. As a Tech Lead for Data Infrastructure Privacy, I’m supporting a team of 5 engineers in their daily challenges, working to ensure user data stays private to only the uses that our users intended.As a hands on engineering manager, I have managed a team of 4, while responsible for the technical direction of 50. Regardless of whether I am directly managing an engineer within my scope, I serve as a mentor for the Tech Leads and a number of the senior and staff level engineers. My daily technologies include Python, SQL, and an absurd number of written communications, including architecture, compliance, and legal.

As the lead of a team of 6 engineers, I delivered major company initiatives by working closely with key stakeholders, such as product, information security, site reliability, data analytics and the management team, to uncover requirements, translating those requirements into software architecture, breaking that architecture into prioritized chunks which could be completed by engineers within a sprint, and guiding engineers to take on work that they would be able to deliver which would produce incremental value towards those deliverable. While keeping the team focused on delivery, created opportunities for engineers to grow by carving out areas for them to design, and reviewing those designs with them before incorporating them into the backlog. Delivered secure data pipelines using AWS cloud infrastructure with CloudFormation and Kotlin, while meeting NIST, HITRUST, HIPAA, and contractual requirements.

Together with one Co-Founder, we built an exciting, immersive, escape room in Salem Massachusetts.While a part of this team, I led the efforts to raise capital, negotiate contracts, design and execute online marketing and build our core technology.Together with my cofounder, designed story experiences, built and managed a staff, and grew revenue from 0 to 6 figures annually.

As Team Lead on the Payments Core team, I was responsible for making sure Toast and it’s customers transactions are processed, and spearheading development of new features to move us to a market lead position in the payments space. I was also responsible for the technical direction of the team, and the development of the engineers on it. My team and I designed and built a fraud checking dropwizard microservice, monitored and reduced operational costs associated with taking payments by finding and eliminating edge and corner cases which would otherwise require manual intervention, triaged a large backlog of issues in existing infrastructure, and delivered an "unremarkable" payments experience.Relevant technologies used include Java, Dropwizard, Metrics, AWS, etc.

While not everything I'm working on can be discussed outside of Google, in terms of what's publicly released I've been:Working with the Travel Profiles team to create the user specific data which supports the Google Trips apps (https://get.google.com/trips/) and Trips in Inbox. Creating and driving processes to improve parser precision through automation, monitoring of performance of heuristic and ML based parsers, and improving, extending and replacing parsers and parsing systems. Designed, built, deployed and monitored Beetlecron Butler, a tool which experiments with, and monitors the results of, different choices as to how to parse flight and hotel emails, trading off between machine learning based parsers, hand crafted parsers, heuristic parsers, and others, increasing overall precision of the system by about 1%, with gains continually accruing. Worked in a privacy conscious and PWG approved manner to increase precision in flight and hotel name and confirmation code extraction, assisting Google in creating new features which rely on those attributes. Implemented incremental improvements to travel email parsing, demonstrating measurable impact through provable changes in overall system precision.

As part of the Platform 2.0 initiative, designed, developed and deployed Java and Node microservices with a small team. Developed Workflow Service, which allowed for automation of business tasks through BPMN expressions, and integrated for automatic triggering of workflows based on state changes in the athenahealth Monolith.

Built person propensity scoring system using machine learning using Apache Mahout to predict likelihood of persons to perform activities of interest, such as attending specific movies. Designed and built merging architecture, allowing software to merge information about persons from multiple vendors, are merge data about persons deduced to be the same, allowing for more robust person propensity scoring.Deployed searchable indices using SolrCloud, to allow for massive scaling of cloud based, AWS hosted infrastructure.Built seat pricing software to dynamically reprice sporting seats based on market movements
