For over 25 years I have designed, built and managed products, systems and experiences with the human impact of my decisions in mind whether they are the end users or the people who are developing the solution. I love the challenge of finding answers that solve user problems while giving delighted ownership to those who create the product. I have built my career on the principles of context, communication, and creativity. I deeply believe in the Charles Ames maxim, “never delegate understanding.” This idea has been central in my career. Whether engaging with a customer or working with stakeholders and makers, the more I “walk in their shoes” the better I understand, appreciate, and facilitate their contributions to the end goal. I believe that when communicating with stakeholders and makers, the level of context and clarity is directly related to the success of a project. This is equally important in finding the empathetic center of a user’s experience so the right solution can be designed and created. I believe that creativity is a peak skill that can be fostered in people and organizations. People like to feel capable. People like to feel creative. They produce great things when they feel competent and creative. A career of creative problem solving has made me trust and love iteration which is the fuel of any creative process. I also believe in hunting for a fresh perspective to reexamine familiar issues, even those that may seem obvious.I believe that teams are best when they self-organize in a safe and understood environment. Having worked in remote, co-located and hybrid models, I have learned a team’s success is not built into the workplace model but in the clarity of communication, comfort with systems, and the collective understanding of the desired goal. In summary, I am an intentional generalist because creating products and experiences is a process undertaken by many points of view and experiences. The more context, background and insight I can bring to the moment the more capable I am, the more helpful I am, and the more useful I am to the goal.
