Why does education and training tend to be so damn boring? It's a question I've asked myself in high school, college, and law school. It's a question I've asked myself during employee in-service training, especially during bloodborne pathogen training (is there anything more boring than that?). And it's a question I've asked myself during seminars and professional development workshops.Sure, there were some engaging high school classes, college courses, and training workshops. But those were exceptions -- anomalies, really.Since transitioning from the legal profession to the education and training profession, I've made it my mission to transform the boring into the engaging. -- As a high school English teacher, I spent my summer "vacation" radically reworking the curriculum to make it interesting. I stacked the official textbooks in the corner of the classroom and, instead, selected books, stories, and articles that tenth-grade students would actually enjoy reading. Guess what? That year, the passage rate on the statewide standardized reading assessment increased by 18 percent, a record achievement.-- As a college professor, I welcomed the opportunity to make federal tax law interesting and memorable. And it worked. Over time, course enrollment increased because students heard that federal tax law was pretty damn interesting -- not to mention useful.-- And now, as a customer service and leadership trainer, I focus on strategies that make customer service and leadership training engaging: I transform dry statistics into memorable stories, translate abstract theory into practical strategies; and don't put anyone -- including myself -- to sleep in the process.That's me, and that's what I'm all about: transforming the boring into the engaging.
