My name is Gráinne Ahern and I am from Youghal, Co.Cork. I am a third year BA Arts Music student in UCC. My third year of study comprises of 50 credits of music and 10 credits of politics. I have previously studied politics at more intense level, undertaking 15 credits in my first year and 30 in my second year. . I have ambitions to complete a PME and become a secondary school music teacher. I have being playing the concertina since the age of seven and I have learnt from the best of the best throughout the years, through private tuition and also attending various summer schools and workshops (Meitheal Summer school, Scoil Samhradh Willie Clancy, Consairtín etc). I am thrilled to pass on the music and skills I have learnt throughout the years to the next generation. I teach music privately via one to one lessons from my home, as well as in organisations such as Comhaltas branches and primary schools. I teach concertina lessons, catering to all levels from beginners to advanced, covering repertoire, technique and ornamentation. I have also worked with mixed instrument groups and grúpaí cheoil arrangements. I aim to build on my teaching this year and gain more experience and also complete the TTCT music teacher training run by Comhaltas. I was thrilled to receive a Quercus Creative and Performing Arts Scholarship this year. I am actively involved in the traditional Irish music society in UCC, as well as being a Peer Support Leader for incoming first years in UCC. I am a Doc Gleason Awards recipient as well as a recipient of a Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Scholarship, both awarded to me by the music department in UCC. I am an academic and entertainments rep for third year Arts-Music students this year. I have lots of performance experience in various formal and informal settings. I have performed and been successful in numerous Fleadhanna, I have performed at the Fuaim concert series in UCC as part of my Doc Gleason Award. I have performed for weddings, funerals and other events.
