Profile bio

About Grant Schneider

I am currently finishing my master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. Since last spring, I have been working on my thesis in the Center for Bionic Medicine at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. For my thesis, I am developing a compact, low-cost prosthetic wrist device capable of wrist rotation, wrist flexion/extension, and hand open/close. The device is very close to being ready for patient testing and I am excited to see how it may improve users’ abilities to perform tasks. I plan to complete my thesis and graduate this June.Prior to studying at Northwestern University, I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Computer and Information Science from Ohio State University in 2017. I also graduated with Honors Research Distinction in Mechanical Engineering for completing an undergraduate thesis in the NeuroMuscular Biomechanics Laboratory on how simulated muscle weakness affects the sit to stand transfer. Additionally, I was an honors engineering teaching assistant for four semesters, which allowed me to foster the development of new engineering students. When I started my undergraduate degree, I thought I wanted to be an engineer because I enjoyed math and science. At that point, I really hadn’t put much thought into what I would do for the rest of my life. However, as I continued my education, my motivation to become an engineer evolved. I began to understand that engineers have the opportunity to solve diverse, challenging problems with great effect on peoples’ lives. Furthermore, engineers must solve these problems in an ever-changing technological landscape, which requires them to constantly learn new skills. Now that I am nearing the completion of my master’s degree, I am searching for a full-time position at a company where I will: • Encounter new, challenging problems • Continue my development and learn new skills • Utilize emerging technologies • Collaborate in a team environment
