Every day I work to become a better scientist so that eventually I can develop biologic and pharmacologic solutions to some of humanity's greatest medical challenges. Aging and its associated diseases represent the largest burden on healthcare spending, family and caregivers, and our personal lives out of any disease class. I believe that by working to understand these diseases we can find new treatments for them, helping us all to live longer, healthier lives. I have studied molecular biology lab techniques and bioinformatics to tackle physical wet lab work and in-silico problems to achieve the most understanding of biological systems. I am also passionate about biotechnology entrepreneurship. At Northeastern I work with school staff to build interest in enterprise among students, and I regularly compete in Maine Start Summit pitch competitions to train my problem solving and communications skills in a business context. My next steps after finishing my Masters degree are to pursue a PhD in computational biology. I am looking for a strongly interdisciplinary program that wont silo me into just computation or just wet lab work. Good science must incorporate both and I want to hone my understanding in both realms so that I can move effortlessly between the two approaches to grapple with the most complex problems of biology. My dream is to start a biotechnology company focused on longevity and long-term health. I have a long way to go before I get there. I have years education ahead of me before I have my PhD, and there is always more to learn. I am grateful to my coworkers, collaborators, classmates, teachers and supervisors over the years. Bioinformatics Co-Op StudentNortheastern University Jan 2023 - Jul 2023Portland, Maine, United StatesAs a co-op student at Dr. Christine Lary's lab at the Roux Institute at Northeastern, I conducted pharmacogenomic studies investigating the impact of genotype and beta blocker treatment on bone outcomes to better understand genetic causes of variability in treatment response and open the door for repurposing of beta blockers to treat osteoporosis and further the field of personalized medicine.I primarily worked in R, using Northeastern's high performance compute cluster Discovery to efficiently parallelize my workflows to handle large amounts of genomic data in a timely manner. I fit linear mixed models for the interaction effect of genotype and beta blocker treatment in both cross sectional and longitudinal data from the Framingham Heart Study and compared those data to results from a Mayo Clinic pilot trial in order to identify genetic variants of interest and compare those to the literature. I used ggplot2 and flextable R packages to create informative plots to easily convey our data in order to better understand trends across genetic regions in the genes ADRB1, ADRB2 and HDAC4. I was very pleased to present my results and abstract at the CHARGE conference in Boston, MA in May 2023 where my abstract was selected to be presented in a blitz section of highlighted posters. I also conducted a genome wide association study (GWAS) using FHS data looking at genetic influences on trabecular bone score, an emerging bone health metric, in collaboration with colleagues at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I am grateful for my time with Dr. Lary and her team, and for the opportunity to develop my skills in statistics and data analysis workflow management. -
Production Technician IiEnvirologix Nov 2021 - Aug 2022Portland, Maine, United StatesI performed quality assurance and root cause analysis for Envirologix's lateral flow assays and ELISA kits for GMO traits and mycotoxins in plants. I prepared reports and diligently pursued solutions to any issues that arose during testing before batches were sent out to customers. I took my role very seriously, as millions of dollars and in the case of mycotoxin testing, human health were at stake. I used both qualitative and quantitative analysis to determine the functioning of our immuno-assays, using scans to determine how well our lateral flow assay test line and control line intensities and the differential between them matched to previous batches. I also worked to identify trends over time that showed the need to review manufacturing techniques to prevent potential future problems. I also worked closely with the Product Development team in this regard, combining their biochemistry expertise with my understanding of the production process to develop standard operating procedures and manufacturing guidelines that facilitated accurate and precise testing in a timely manner. I worked with product development both on optimizing already existing products as well as shepherding new products through the manufacturing process, making note of any issues unique to that product and how future quality control technicians could identify, report, and correct them.I am grateful for my time at Enivrologix and I wish the best of luck to my coworkers and supervisors. I left the position in August 2022 to pursue my Masters degree full time and because I was looking for a change to focus more on my true passion which is human health and treatments for diseases of aging. -
Research AssistantEnvirologix Jul 2021 - Nov 2021Portland, Maine, United StatesIn my first real job out of university, I worked under my supervisor Brea O'Brien on the development of new immunoassay products for GMO traits in plants. My project consisted of optimizing a new lateral flow device to test for the presence of the GMO protein AHAS in soy. Soy was a difficult matrix to work with compared to corn due to the complex lipid content of the seeds which often interfered with the flow and binding of the gold nano-particles in the device. I worked to test different combinations of buffers, extraction techniques, gold optical density, and other properties to optimize the performance of the assay. Upon the completion of this project I moved to the production team to work on quality control. I received excellent mentoring from Elix's scientific staff and I found the work environment extremely welcoming and appreciative of new talent. -
Research AssistantDouglas Mental Health Institute Oct 2019 - Mar 2020Montreal, CanadaI worked under supervisor Daniel Almeida at the Gustavo Turecki lab as a volunteer research assistant intern. Daniel Almeida was researching the epigenetic impacts of major child abuse on the brain tissue of people who died by suicide. I worked to dissect post-mortem human brain tissue in a blinded study, where the samples would be separated using fluorescence assisted cell sorting and epigenetic analysis would be performed.The position ended due to covid-19 before I could participate in the epigenetic analysis myself, but I learned a great deal about the subject during my time at the lab. My key takeaways from my time working for now Dr. Almeida are the ability to work in a strict high-safety wet lab environment, the ability to perform careful dissections of human tissue, a greater understanding of epigenetics and its role in neuro-cognitive development and how childhood experiences affect outcomes like suicide in adulthood. -
