About Gabriel Sutton
Currently starting off my career as a Developer at CTG Melbourne! Could not be happier!I used my time in college to enjoy learning and putting myself into positions where I feel I lack a skill in order to improve.I pride that while I enjoy a level of organization and direction when working on a project from those above me, over the course of the past few years I have constantly put myself in situations where I must think and choose the right paths for myself and present them to my superiors and show a level of autonomy. I have the discipline to follow through and research the mechanics behind a solution I implement such that I can recognize the internal mechanics and recognize an issue beyond my control. For example, many CAD programs are focusing on dynamic mesh refinement, though many times the algorithms for which must be made bespoke for the application. For this reason I did not feel comfortable using them unless I understood how to create and use them myself; Therefore I began doing research under PHD students in numerical methods. Now for my job I have been able to recognize when the software itself has an issue by the outcome that I receive, especially in circumstances where a primitive algorithm may have failed to converge properly but presents itself as if it has. This 'Engineers Intuition' I feel is invaluable, and does not require a complete understanding of the subject. In this same vein, I have found issues that could be improved, presented them to my superiors, delved into content for several weeks, journaling and logging my findings in detail, and then prototyped solutions to these engineering problems using programming knowledge. This is what I then show to my superiors along with the updates of what I have learned if they so desire to prove I have found and can create a solution, but more importantly , that i can back it up with basic documentation. It is my understanding that workflows although different depending on industry, need this kinds of adaptation from higher level engineers in order to interconnect many employees without causing discord within a single project due to the differing plans of attacks of each individual tasked on a single part, and is something I am very anxious to continue to educate my self on with new work opportunities with larger groups.

Developer
CurrentWorking on web system responsible managing automated testing of new versions of custom software, as well as deploying them to the field.
Automation Programmer (Remotely)
CurrentWorking with Cad software to idealize and create Automated process that instantly creates complete blueprints based on simple dimensions for rapid product creation under constraints of legacy systems and software. Necessary to utilize , math, basic physics, and programming skills. Familiarizing and working with existing company automation processes and constraints (for ex, visual similarity to existing products) across multiple platforms.Highlighted Eng Skills:CADProgramming (VBA. VB.net, C#, Self motivated education)Linear Algebra/MathematicsBasic PhysicsRapid Problem solving (1-2 day turn around, with reports)Customer Communication skills (weekly Write-ups of progress made)Learned the importance of using project management tools such as Teams, Devops, and Boards to manage bugs, and create multiple branches with sprint meetings.Examples of Programming Practices:Program consisted of 3 separate parts for reliability, an VBA Addon, an custom Windows Application, an Custom Windows Process. Had to include DLL's/libraries from other custom software used by the company. Highly Organized Module list for each major step of the countertop creation process to keep major components independent of one another. Modules further split into many independent functions with documentation and error handling to ensure something always prints so the user is empowered to fix issues.Heavy use of custom classes to minimize complexity of passing information into functions.Automatic error reports that are useful for the user to catch mistakes in data input or inconsistencies in measurements that may cause issues in manufacturing. Traditionally, each file required manual review to be caught.Creation of Multiple PDF's, File Formats, including testing to ensure the files are output to custom locations indicated by the user. and so that other automated processes in the workflow of the company such as manufacturing run smoothly especially during COVID.
Website Designer
Contacted customer and created in depth contract with list of deliverables for the upgrading of an old unused website to modern standards for a new business. Met regularly with the customer during the active development period, and Irregularly afterward to continue developing the website. Involved weekly/bi-weekly progress reports and multiple proposals for possible changes as they were needed. Gained experience working with HTML5 and CSS, aswell as with combining different parts of BootStrap5's features to a custom webpage without using pre-sets. Gained experience with basic web UI development, and gained beginner experience using jQuery and JavaScript to make a custom Menu and a media player. Gained experience with basic PHP, which involved setting up a development environment specifically for testing the PHP for a Call To Action form that was modified from an existing template, to email the customer. This was taken on as a side endeavor mostly out of interest. However, it could be useful for converting certain applications or workflows that are created in house at engineering firms by employees, into ones that are web-based to remove the need for workers to have direct access to critical files. It would also remove the need for such software to be distributed to each machine, and allow for direct integration with servers to leverage their batch processing capabilities. Additionally learning to work independently with a customer and creating realistic expectations where important skills. The skills to predict/deliver features on time, and giving proper warning when timelines cannot be met was also practiced.
Studying Numerical Methods, Fea
Becoming independent and furthering my programming and understanding of how tools used in industry to create and simulate meshes of flows and stress (Ansys, Solid Works, ect.) by studying under PHD researcher in the field. completely self taught for all programming languages I learn, but constantly iterate to become familiar with how an industry professional organizes and develop code, writing articles and papers and working within a DevOps enviroment with task assignment and work logging as is usual in industry. Programming/Research learning outcomes:Created basic meshing tool for Initial Element creation, that used a custom multi-level matrix similar to a database. (Soft links to other elements to allow node insertion ect.)Created simple FEA Thermodynamic simulations of 2-D and some 3-D parts completely from scratch based on various research papers. Experimented with basic dynamic node insertion/deletion algorithms modified from research papers to reduce error from not meeting minimum node densityExperimentation with replicating adaptive time stepping algorithmsCreated basic graphical output for the program to communicate results.Soft Skill Outcomes:Managing Timeline with little oversightRecording findingsLearning new programming libraries and languages with no outside oversightRecording issues and problems encountered, such that it gave insight into how modern FEA Software packages function.
Internship
Qualified and was part of an in depth High-school Internship/shadowing program at Northrop Grumman run by Stephanie Fitzsimmons. Learned about how and what the company does, participated in mock work scenarios, learned different skillets from various aspects of the company, and how to become integrated with the company. Shadowed two workers in depth, and helped where I could, learning what they do and their workflow and how I could be a part of that and the application of knowledge that would be required of me.
