For seven years Glenn Burns served in the Navy Hospital Corps, caring for his fellow sailors on what was colloquially termed “the blue side,” as well as his Marine Corps brothers and sisters on “the green side.” His medical practice as a hospital corpsman touched five continents and many thousands of human beings. In the years following his military service and college graduation, Mr. Burns carried with him into the nursing profession not only his Navy Core Values of honor, courage and commitment, but the Marine Corps’ mantra for facing any problem: adapt and overcome. As an ER nurse, these values were essential. And after a number of years, Mr. Burns believed he had more to offer the nursing profession. He understood that one cannot lead until one first learns how to follow, and the time to lead was now.
