  • University Of Iowa
    Fellow And Teaching Assistant/Research Assistant
University Of Iowa Aug 1998 - Jun 2005
    • Seashore-Ballard Dissertation Writing Fellow, 2004-2005• Conducted Ph.D. research on Russian-speaking migrants’ lives in Amsterdam, July 2002-June 2003. This study indicated that Russian-speaking migrants were increasingly socially and economically marginalized in Dutch society as anti-migrant attitudes grew in this period. Contributing factors were nationalist fears stemming from 9/11 and European Union integration and expansion efforts. • Ph.D. research methodologies included extensive participant-observation, interviews (in Russian and English), and volunteer work with three non-governmental organizations that worked with migrants and sex workers: De Rode Draad, TAMPEP, and a café for homeless people (mainly migrants).• Presented research at two international academic conferences and currently preparing publications for peer-reviewed journals.• Master’s research on U.S. men’s motivations for seeking mail-order/internet introductions with women in the former Soviet Union, Summer 1999. This study illustrated the complexity of cross-cultural romantic relationships. Many U.S. men sought former-Soviet partners because they imagined them to be an idealized, 1950’s version of American women. However, this idealization did not, de facto, result in men having greater power over the women in the relationships (although they did have greater legal power over the women because of U.S. immigration laws at that time).
