In my first year of law school, I spent a day in the company of an admirable trial lawyer. The experience sparked an undending passion for advocacy—the fuel of my professional activity ever since. The lion’s share of my practice is criminal defence work. As a criminal defence lawyer, I have appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia. I have acquired trial experience with judge-alone trials and trials by jury—in both official languages. I also assist Spanish-speaking clients regularly. I have provided legal representation to individuals on charges ranging from theft to murder. One of my cases received a favourable unanimous ruling at the Supreme Court of Canada. As a result, the language rights of francophones charged with provincial offences have been broadened. On several occasions, I was hired as ad hoc prosecutor by the Province of British Columbia and performed trial work and charge assessments, gaining valuable insight in the process.Through criminal defence work, I continue to refine the typical skillset of a Barrister-at-Law. I apply those skills in other areas of law. In mental health law, I appear before review board hearings and review panels. Many cases I worked on intersected criminal and mental health law (e.g., NCRMD, fitness to stand trial and non-insane automatism). In the area of prisoners' law, I have acquired experience though Prisoners’ Legal Services, who hires me periodically, when a francophone inmate appears before the parole board or at a disciplinary hearing.
