Teaching in breeding for resistance, vegetable plant breeding, and vegetable production. Research on vegetable landraces, vegetable local genetic resources, native Solanum species and onion breeding. Onions with intermediate-cycle were identified as the best adapted to agri-climatic conditions in South Uruguay. A breeding program was set in 1991 and the cv “Pantanoso del Sauce CRS” (2000) was released. Nowadays it is widely adopted in South Uruguay (60% acreage) next to our cv “Canarita CRS” (2006). A certification seed production system was built from our group, allowing the application of research products in agricultural systems. From 2007 we also work in resistance against Peronospora and Fusarium diseases in onion, continuing the research began with my PhD in Wageningen University (2004-2009). Sweet pepper (Capsicum sp), carrot (Daucus carota), and grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) landraces were also collected and characterized. Variability among carrot landraces supported the potential to develop summer cultivars.Other multi-institutional and interdisciplinary research projects: - Study and exploitation of Solanum commersonii, a native tuber-bearing species. Contributions were made to the collection, the establishment of ex-situ collections, and the selection for resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum (from 2000).- A project with farmers’ organizations promoted the production of organic seeds of landraces, and the establishment of a seeds' network between farmers (in situ participatory conservation system) from 2004.- Analysis of the inter-pollination between GM and no-GM maize crop in commercial fields in Uruguay was evaluated, in order to know the risk in the maintenance of maize landraces by small household farmers (from 2007).
