I was a visual artist, before I was a condensed matter physicist, before I became an oral historian and community archivist. Today I work to document oral histories from the largest mass displacement in recorded human history: the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. I work with my team to continuously innovate and evolve new techniques for crowdsourcing and archiving crowdsourced oral histories of Partition.I am one of millions whose family legacy was shaped by Partition. To help us unravel this great tragedy of the last century, so that as a global civilization we may move forward on a more informed footing, I have helped build a platform for documenting individual witness oral histories to discover the nuanced bigger picture of Partition. The platform is called The 1947 Partition Archive. I believe the end goal for a thriving human civilization is to live compassionately. Only through an honest and critical understanding our past can we strive to make sound decisions in the future. Before working on Partition, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship as a physicist at the University of California at Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. I absolutely loved my work (discovering nature is infectious and exhilarating), but because unsolved problems in physics were always going to be there, while Partition witnesses were aging and wouldn't be with us for long, I decided to give up my career to focus on documenting and immortalizing witness voices. Before any of this, I was a visual artist and somehow managed to win numerous awards by the time I graduated high school. To me, pursuing mathematics and physics are extensions of art... another form of creative expression. I feel the same about my work now, as an oral historian, community archivist and curator of digital public histories.

FounderThe 1947 Partition Archive Jan 2010 - PresentBerkeley, Ca, UsDo you have memories to share from the 1947 Partition of South Asia? If so, contact our team. The 1947 Partition Archive is a crowdsourced collection of life stories shaped by the Partition of South Asian states, built by people for people. Stories from the Archive are being streamed online via the Stanford Digital Repository at the Stanford University Libraries, and we are presently working on making the stories accessible at libraries across the world. -
Board MemberSeven Council Fires Arts Nov 2020 - Jan 2024A lost wallet during a road trip I took through the American heartland during the late summer of 2020 led to a chance encounter with the incredible world of indigenous American arts from the "plains Indian" communities of the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. Long story short, this is how I met the founder of Seven Council Fires Native Arts, who is working to create a larger audience and greater appreciation for the incredible artists at the Pine Ridge Reservation. I have a deep appreciation for the original bearers of this American land I now call home and I look forward to helping uplift the community that has been sidelined, but whom I know will show us the way in the future with their intimate knowledge of the land. I look forward to lending my knowledge and experience from founding and running operations at The 1947 Partition Archive, to helping Seven Council Fires Native Arts expand their impact and reach their next growth milestone in supporting native artists and their families.

Co-CreatorCovid-19 Self Reporting Tool Mar 2020 - Apr 2020As scientists we understand that data are critical for developing a true and realistic understanding of COVID-19. Moved by the grave pandemic facing all of us, we felt it was our duty as individuals with advanced training in the sciences to come together and create a tool that fills the gaps in our knowledge for COVID-19.One of the major problems facing our global community at this time is the lack of testing. Presently, most countries only offer testing to individuals in critical condition or those who are hospitalized. Because of this, many individuals aren't being tested for COVID-19 and official global data on the number of people infected with the virus, and the viral spread is inaccurate and misleading.Motivated by this problem we have come together to combine our skills and create a tool that will create more transparency on the spread of COVID-19 and provide the data we need to overcome this pandemic as a global community.

Physicist Postdoctoral FellowLawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Nov 2009 - Dec 2012Berkeley, Ca, UsAt UC Berkeley and the Berkeley Lab, I am interested in exploring and understanding the unique electronic/spintronic properties of oxide systems via magnetotransport measurements. Presently this includes quantum wells at oxide interfaces buried in heterostructure geometries, oxide nanostructures and conducting ferroelectric domain boundaries. -
