Independent contractor/consultant to a startup oilsands research company. Actively involved in the development (design, fabrication, assembly, testing) of revolutionary, alternative bitumen extraction and production technology.

Project engineering duties. Resident in the EPCM home office as Shell representative, focusing on the E&T (Extraction & Tailings) area of the new mine facility (Jackpine). Also resident on-site at Jackpine construction site (FIFO for 1.5 years). The scope of work carried a budget of $500 million. Functions include the overseeing and monitoring of engineering progress and the meeting of deliverables as per EPCM contractual requirements, coordinating “flawless startup initiative”, risk management, and lessons learned initiative. Daily tasks include aspects of complete project life-cycle: budget and scheduling reviews, scope management and control, constructability, supply chain and contracts, quality and HSE requirements, liaison with construction contractors and the construction management team and creating and maintaining team moral. All work requires knowledge of applicable Codes and Standards (ie. CSA, ASME, API) and Owner Specifications, project procedures, the selection of appropriate technology, technical writing, field trips and contractor meetings, and knowledge of regulatory requirements.
