Co-led 30+ tests on the synthesis of Jet fuel from castor oil. We studied the reaction between castor oil and water int he precedence of platinum catalyst. The platinum coupled with water reacts together to cleave a carboxyl group of the lipid. A long linear hydrocarbon is formed, then under high temperatures and pressure the long hydrocarbon undergoes cracking. This now simpler hydrocarbon can be used to in the production of jet fuel. The objective was to break down the 57 carbon chain down into small chains or 14-16 carbons. We performed our tests in a 5100 batch reactor and examined our yields using a HP 6890 gas chromatograph.
