First thing I worked on upon arriving at LANL was to get our 10 compute node stateless cluster up and running with CentOS. After getting that done, we then moved to begin our research project: Hardware Offloading of Reed-Solomon Encoding. The lab was currently using RS for a campaign storage file system called MarFS, and was looking to the possibility of offloading this computationally taxing calculation onto the Mellanox ConnectX-4 Infiniband cards already installed in their machines for networking, but needed to know if they were fast enough, and backwards compatible.By the end of the summer, we'd collectively written a few thousand lines of C code, a few hundred lines of bash scripts, and gotten some very positive results. While the ConnectX-4 cards were incompatible since they don't support a Galois Field of 2^8, the paradoxically cheaper ConnectX-5 cards enabled full backwards compatibility. As for throughput of encoding, we were able to very definitively rule in favor of the Mellanox cards, especially when multiple cards were slotted into a single machine.

During my time at 3DR, I spent most days customizing orders by adding additional hardware, lighting, and other such things. Once a week or so, we'd go out to a nearby field to run test flights with the drones and make sure everything was working properly. On the days where there wasn't much I could help with, I worked on completing an abandoned prototype for an eight-legged, sixteen-motor copter.
