About Gus Fraser Harris

I am a post-doc at the University of Edinburgh researching low carbon heating solutions for the decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector. I work on low temperature resources such as ground source and water source heat pumps and have a keen interest in the potential for heat recovery and recycling to create circular heat networks. My aim is to contribute to the development and implementation of successful low carbon solutions to facilitate a Net Zero future. With a background in geology I have always been motivated by the role that geosciences plays in energy provision, and have experience working on research projects as diverse as radioactive waste disposal, both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon recovery, and geothermal energy. Recently, my interest is focussed on low temperature heating resources and the potential for geothermal energy to provide low carbon power and heating via heat pumps. I have developed skills in numerical modelling of coupled systems and combine these with experimental expertise to investigate fundamental processes key to successful development of new techniques. During my post-doc position I have commissioned a world-unique experimental aparatus capable of recreating realistic subsurface conditions of temperature, fluid pressure, and stress, which is currently used to investigate wellbore stimulation techniques for geothermal energy and shallow groundwater wells.

I have worked on a range of projects during my post-doc. These have included developing unique experimental equipment for geomechanical investigations of rock under realistic subsurface conditions, numerical modelling of geothermal energy and subsurface fluid flow in heterogeneous media. Most recently, I have worked on novel wellbore stimulation techniques, new combined risk assessment approaches for onshore subsurface activites, and how to ensure sustainability of shallow geothermal resources. I have a particular interest in using knowledge gained through these projects for the decarbonisation of heating and cooling in the UK.
