Project title:"Encouraging healthy and sustainable travel in a university setting"My PhD thesis dealt with the following research topics:1) Public transport (PT) usersBus journeys tend to be short and a significant proportion of trips might be transferred to lighter travel modes, such as walking or cycling, especially in the light of prevailing dissatisfaction with PT service provision. This, in turn, may render PT a more attractive alternative to current drivers, as issues such as overcrowded PT are resolved. In a series of studies, I have identified six user segments with varying propensity to switch to active travel (published).2) Are there universal traveller types?Previous research has identified different types of drivers, cyclists and public transport users. Yet, to date, the question as to whether there exist traveller types that transcend modes has not been addressed in depth. My research suggests that traveller types may be distinguished independent of people's current mode choice, thus providing an extension to earlier approaches (published).3) Travel mode choice, the built environment and affectWhile encouraging active travel through behaviour change remains important, an even greater importance may be attributed to built environment factors. After all, behaviour change cannot take place unless the conditions allow for it. In two of my studies, I explored people's conception of sustainable urban design (article in preparation) and how (perceived) environmental characteristics are related to actual travel behaviour. Finally, in another study, investigated whether we subconsciously associate modes, such as the car, with positive emotions or negative emotions and how we perceive other mode users depending on the mode that we use ourselves.

I have been supervising two groups of first-year Psychology students in a weekly module that is aimed at helping students to acquire academic writing and presentation skills and to internalize academic integrity.
