Consulted for Tatarian Funds and global media company.Built complex multi-factor market model to develop a systematic approach to extracting performance from biases in the way that the market assesses financial data, and to get away from investment anecdote and received wisdom, and towards a more data-based approach to what “works”.Built historic testing model to assess effectiveness of fundamental screens. Built model for backtesting technical analysis and indicators. Looked at advanced warning signs of corporate distress.

Investment management. Tatarian Funds managed global long-short mid-cap equity and global long-only equity funds (US, Europe & Asia), using companies’ financial statements to find exploitable change in the world economy.My role included:- Analysing financial statements and businesses models of target companies to determine the character and duration of the change. I built models as way of working through the dynamics of a company's development.- I developed and tracked fundamental screens of companies’ financials on a global basis as a starting point for idea generation. I developed country and industry cash flow models.- I oversaw the fund's accounting, performance, external NAV accountants and interactions with fund administrator.

Performed reviews of strategic opportunities and telecom markets, conducted due diligence, developed internal corporate valuation models, performed internal valuations of PCCW divisions.Specific projects included:- Preliminary and full due diligence of overseas M&A targets (Korea, India, USA). Coordinated bankers, lawyers, accountants, valuation model. - Reviewed and valued business unit. Briefed business units on valuation, strategies and M&A process before meeting potential JV partners.- Reviewed regional regulatory environment. Briefed Hong Kong-based regulatory department on Asian environment, with a focus on practical perspective for a telco operator.- Developed a valuation framework, both market-centric and for detailed internal forecasting purposes.- Developed overseas divisions’ business plans (Japan, UK), to help with strategy and (for UK) renegotiation of pre-existing and onerous joint venture contract.

After joining Crosby Securities (subsequently SocGen Crosby and SG Securities) as an investment analyst in the Equity Research department covering telecoms, utilities and infrastructure (ranked analyst in telecoms and building materials), I moved to Equity Corporate Finance in January 1999, where I was a key member of a small team that built a successful Asian telecoms M&A practice from scratch.Our deals included:- Advising Daewoo Corp on its exit of its global telecom services assets. This included due diligence and valuing its China and Bangladesh assets and negotiating with China Unicom over the exit of its JV interests.- Advising SK Telecom on the sale of its Thai cellular asset, introducing a new buyer to an inherited process.- Advising a leading Asian internet company on its internal restructuring and strategic investor search.

I joined Crosby Securities, which Société Générale bought in 1996, as an investment analyst.
