1959 – 1995 (36 years)WorldwideI obtained a flying scholarship as an ATC cadet in 1957 and gained a PPL on the Tiger Moth at Wolverhampton. I spent 2 years in general aviation before joining the RAF, training as a pilot in the General Duties Branch. I and flew Canberra and Hunter aircraft followed by loan service with the Royal Navy flying Buccaneers off HMS Victorious and Hunters at Lossiemouth. 2 ground tours including one in Plans at Strike Command HQ were followed by a Flight Commander appointment on a Buccaneer Squadron in Germany.where unfortunately I had a mid-air collision. A desk job at MOD in Operational Requirements interrupted flying before taking up the post of OC Flying at RAF St Athan. Here I had the joy of flying all but the very large aircraft serviced there including Phantom, Buccaneer and Tornado while being responsible for all of the sevices on the airfield including ATC, fire services, the mountain rescue team and the visiting aircraft servicing team. After 8 years I moved to training aircrew from the UK, Germany and Italy on the Tornado,.followed by QFI training on the Tucano which took me to mandatory retirement at age 55. A short spell in civie street on simulators in Germany and UK led to a recall to flying again in the RAF on Bulldogs and the Grob Tutor until at age 62 I was retired again..
