I deliver workshops to the next generation of leaders in sport on the Master of Sport Directorship Course (MSD) at Manchester Metropolitan University. It is immensely rewarding engaging with highly professional people from sports such as the Premier League, F1, tennis, equestrian, rugby, cricket, swimming, hockey and NFL in America who either aspire to be Sporting Directors or wish to understand the role better as CEOs.So why is this role only recently introduced in the UK such a hot topic? Quite simply, as sport has become big business, the need has arisen for organisations to develop a vision, philosophy and strategy to drive development and success. It’s something global brands have done for years, and now sport is making giant strides to catch-up. This drive for improvement is at the heart of what EIGER Sport and Business Performance is all about.

I have been working with the University of St Andrews Rugby Club developing their leadership, performance and organisational culture. I am also delivering leadership workshops as part of the 'Saints Leaders Programme' run by the Centre for Academic, Professional and Organisational Development.

I run various workshops at the Coach & Volunteer Academy on leadership development, High Performance Teams and Event Management. The aims of the Academy are to provide opportunities for all students (not just sports students) to develop professional skills, gain nationally recognised qualifications and enhance their student experience through coaching and volunteering in sport. There are around 550 students now in the academy and many of them have an interest in event management and are supporting all of the major sporting events on campus.

One of the most coveted senior operational roles in World Rugby, the remit of which was to plan and implement the British and Irish Lions Tour to Hong Kong and Australia in 2013. Aside from the Head Coach, this was the most pivotal role within the Management Team.Mission/Outcome: Created optimal environment which enabled Touring Party success in Australia 2013 – the first time The British and Irish Lions have achieved a series win in 16 years.Key Responsibilities:• Advised and assisted the board on the selection of the Head Coach and other key members of the Management Team.• Provided Head Coach with robust series of operational options, all fully analysed & costed. • Delivered ‘World Class’ operational support on the tour in UK, Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia.• Developed positive working relationships with key stakeholders such as Governing Bodies, National Management Teams, Professional Clubs and Sponsors thus ensuring that their support was there when required. • Accountable for planning and running the detailed tour schedule ensuring that players and management were able to consistently operate in the most optimal environment for on field success.• Worked closely with sponsors to ensure that they were delivered a product well above their expectations but at the same time the squad preparations were not compromised.• Conducted detailed negotiations with a wide variety of suppliers which included Airlines, Hotels, equipment suppliers and training venues.• Managed the touring party of 85 people within the agreed budget. “The importance of the Operations Director role should not be underestimated. 2 x Roles.1. Head up Dept in Scottish Rugby responsible for the delivery of all operational support to International Teams.2. For National Team I was responsible for the delivery of all off field operational support as well as leadership development. Over this period I was Team Manager for 63 consecutive internationals encompassing RWC 2007 and summer tours to Australia, New Zealand, Argentina (2) and South Africa.

2 x specific roles:1. Responsible for the movement and delivery of all freight on the tour ensuring that it is in the right place at the right time.2. Throughout this period I managed soldiers and their dependants in peacetime and on operations. Trips overseas took me to Iraq, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Bosnia, Canada and America.
