My career as an accountant started with a 2 year stint as a licensed commercial real estate agent. Just out of UGA with an Economics degree, I decided to do what my dad does… mistake. So the same summer I was married, I quit my job and started over (not great planning). After making my way through a 2nd undergraduate degree, audit trails, tax prep, the CPA exam and closely helds, I struck out on my own.My introduction to forensic accounting was trial by fire. I was hired to manage the accounting segment of a huge Receivership case, which was the offshoot of a $32M fraud case. 2 years later the Receivership was put into Bankruptcy Chapter 11 reorganization. Several years after that, the case was converted to Chapter 7 liquidation where I finally remunerated investors a portion of their investment. I haven’t looked back since. What I enjoy about forensic accounting is that it encompasses every aspect of accounting. I have to be up to date on: tax law (for all entities); financial statement presentation (audit, review, compilation, cash flow and notes); bookkeeping (posting transactions); journal entries (adjusting, general, and subsidiary).As a forensic accountant, I am more or less, a finder of fact. I examine financial documents, back-track ledger entries, scrutinize source & supporting documents (bank statements with enclosures, customer & credit files, fixed asset files, loan documents, vendor files, permanent files, etc.), reconstruct records, and interpret & explain the facts. I have worked with most of the alphabet agencies (GBI, FBI, AG, DOJ, etc.). I have also served as an interim CFO on occasion.
