One evening a few years ago I found myself sitting in a sweltering mud hut in Sri Lanka and had a lightbulb moment - I say 'lightbulb', in fact it was an ancient lamp.It was really a case of 'the dog that didn't bark'. As I was choking on paraffin fumes from the lamp by which my host was serving me tea and her children were doing their homework, I realised that I was the only one coughing because my hosts had got used to the toxic fumes that were poisoning them.Next, I realised that we could use simple, clean, cheap solar lighting technology along with our existing supply contacts from the company we ran (Proporta) to clean up people’s air six thousand miles from my home... and keep it clean. This led us to set up a charity (OneSky.charity) which has helped 120 children and counting - replacing paraffin lamps with clean, green solar lamps powered for free by Sri Lanka’s plentiful sunlight, installing fresh drinking water wells and helping with the costs of staying in education – books, uniforms, a bike... We had begun a journey.Next, we set up OneSky.blue and partnered with UCL to develop a small air pollution monitor which reveals invisible air pollution like PM2.5, VOCs and CO2. And now we’ll be doing everything we can to tell people what's in their air and how to improve it with simple steps. We want people to see the invisible killer of air pollution and become 'air aware'.
