About Tommy Guy

Work should be intellectually challenging and demand accuracy and competence across a broad array of fields. As a student and researcher, I have received high accolades for my ability to quickly assimilate myself in a new field and make valuable contributions both to theory and development of novel statistical and numerical techniques. The ideal position is a healthy mix of software/data engineering and Data Science. Michael Hochster would call me a "type B" or "builder" Data Scientist (https://www.quora.com/What-is-data-science). I also very much enjoy teaching Data Science or engineering related subjects both formally and informally as a mentor. I've been involved with Software Carpentry for half a decade and with the Community Data Science Workshops since their inception in 2014.Data Specialties: Data Mining, Statistical Machine Learning, Python (Django and Pandas/Statsmodels/Numpy stack), Hadoop, Hive, Pig, SQL, Spark, AWSEngineering Specialties: Python (Django and Pandas/Statsmodels/Numpy stack), Hadoop, Spark, AWS. I currently do a lot of work in a distributed computing system called Cosmos (MSFT internal tech) that maps well to Hadoop workflows.Older specialties: C++, C, Java, , Perl, Natural Language Processing, Numerical Analysis

At Microsoft, I work on a team of Data Mining researchers on many aspects of the data mining stack. In particular, I work on:1) Data modeling and engineering. How do you make sense of the thousands of signals coming from Office? How do you encode domain and historical information so that results are consistent across data mining teams? I'm working on data models in Office as a precursor to repeatable, principled data mining.2) Statistical modeling of user experience. As an example, I've looked at in-app experiences that lead to support interactions.3) In-app experimentation is a gold standard for analyzing user experience in a web application such as bing.com or Office365. I've collaborated on many aspects of the experimentation platform including basic flighting design, metrics design/implementation, and on final ship decisions.4) Data mining tools. Much of my time is spent designing and developing massive scale statistical and mining algorithms to run in our map reduce framework. This is the task I enjoy the most.

This year, I taught a course on Data Science in the Comm Lead department at the University of Washington. The course was based on a workshop I've been co-developing with Mako Hill. This course was aimed at people who will end up in PM and Marketing roles. I was basically trying to design the people that I want to be consuming my results in the future! Here was my material: http://wiki.communitydata.cc/Community_Data_Science_Course_(Spring_2016)
  • Software Carpentry
    Software Engineering Course Development
    Software Carpentry Sep 2010 - Sep 2016
Developed course material and taught software engineering best practices primarily to PhD level scientists.Wrote lesson material on numerical programming with NumPy and Matlab.Led planning for a 2-day workshop on scientific programming in Toronto.

I led efforts that span internal analysis and data driven product development. Our data set is large and complex: we routinely tackle problems in data visualization, data mining, time series analysis, and NLP.Our core technologies include the python data mining stack (pandas, statsmodels, scikit-learn, numpy, scipy), Hive, and various other nosql data stores.
