Since 2013, Gretchen Van der Veer has served as the CEO of Fair Chance, a social change organization that strengthens local community-based organizations across communities impacted by racism, discrimination, and poverty. We build trusting relationships, close racial equity gaps. and ensure better outcomes for children, youth, and families through transformational capacity building, peer learnings and convenings, partnership with funders, and advocacy with policy makers. to create conditions in communities where every child can succeed.

CNCS (rebranded as AmeriCorps in 2021) is a federal agency that engages more than 5 million Americans in service to their country. Working hand-in-hand with local nonprofits, CNCS provides resources to support the engagement of Americans in addressing the most pressing challenges facing our nation. As Director of Leadership Development and Training, Gretchen led a team of talented professionals and a network of national consultants to build the capacity of thousands of national and local nonprofits/service providers funded by CNCS through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Learn and Serve America, and the Social Innovation Fund. She also oversaw the development and delivery of robust online learning and resource site and national conferences serving 6000 people. Gretchen provided leadership for teams of employees ranging from 10-25, dozens of consultants, and budgets of up to $22 million.

 Created the Nonprofit Capacity Building Grant Program authorized at $5 million with the Serve America Act of 2009. Conducted outreach to stakeholders to design program, drafted and published notice and guidelines, coordinated selection process, and work with intermediary grantees to provide organizational development assistance to nonprofits in areas facing resource hardship challenges.

 Provided leadership for presidentially-appointed council of national leaders and celebrities during transition from Bush to Obama administration. Maintained programs of the Council including the Billion+Change campaign recruiting major corporations to commit a billion dollars of pro bono service time to nonprofit organizations and the President’s Volunteer Service Award program.

 Directed leadership training institute created to fuel emerging national service movement through equipping and inspiring a generation of new leaders. Scaled programs from 150 participants to 8000 over eight years by developing multiple product-lines: National Service Executive program (five-day initial residential training followed by three-day training six months later); National Service Leadership Development Program (three-day residential training program); youth leadership programs (varied in length); and customized products. Supervised eight full-time staff and dozens of consultants. Customer satisfaction for programs exceeded 95% on all product lines.
