Developed the Concept and Requirements Document for FAA radar Surveillance Interface Modernization. These requirements are being used to update radar interfaces to the En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) system using an international standard data format for internet communication. Air traffic controllers use ERAM in Air Route Traffic Control Centers to monitor and control domestic flights between take off and landing. Updated data will provide new information for potential added functionality. Developed a UML logical architecture for this interface for depiction of concept.Developed a complete end-to-end UML logical architecture for modernization of pilot/air traffic controller digital data communications (DataComm). The modeled capability replaces voice clearance dialog with digital messaging. This allows easy transmission of complex clearances and proactive automatic reroutes that will make more efficient use of the National Air Space. Used the model to analyze FAA requirements, and Lockheed system design and System Requirements as a high level critical reviewer. This entailed requirements traceability, code size estimation using function point analysis (COSMIC), and reference documentation for other Systems Engineers. Welcomed DataComm deployment was featured in a recent NBC news broadcast (see link).Assisted with development of benefit/cost analysis of gap filler radar connections to Air Route Traffic Control Centers.
Applied UML architecture modeling to SOA redesign of the FAA NAVAIDS Automated Frequency Management application resulting in a well organized design with significantly fewer design errors relative to projects that did not use modeling.Developed a requirements taxonomy and business process architecture for IRS Accounts Management Services that allowed IRS personnel to easily access over 4000 requirements and view processes depicted as use cases.

Led a team of 30 contractors, IRS co-developers, and programmers to re-depict the UML architecture of IRS Customer Account Data Engine (CADE) batch processing. Led the team through 5 peer reviews resulting in IRS acceptance.Led design team leads, programmers, and IRS co-developers to reverse engineer IRS CADE C++ code into the CADE UML physical architecture. The architecture was successfully peer reviewed and provided a greatly improved baseline for further development.
Reston, Va, Us
Supervised and mentored General Dynamics and BAE Systems engineering design teams to develop UML logical architecture for the Future Combat Systems Manned Ground Vehicle (MGV) program. Online moderation of modeling workshops resulted in 93 use cases in 2 months with functional review acceptance by the client.Conducted modeling workshops to create 88 use cases for MGV general and embedded training architecture. Received a Boeing Pride Award for this effort.

Developed UML physical architecture for Ford’s 2006 Lincoln LS. The architecture modeled 1200 control signals and reported feature and hardware I/O diagrams. The project was termed “extremely successful” by Ford management.
Developed C++ code from forward engineered UML design architecture of a crash test data analysis application while at Ford. The application contained 1500 classes and 5000 files. This was a relatively new application of forward engineering from UML.
Managed 3 programmers to customize AutoCAD into an interactive graphical space utilization planning application. Close supervision of the team/client relationship assured a 3 month rollout ahead of schedule.Planned and implemented Y2K testing of applications for processing payphone and wireless service requests while at BellSouth. The applications successfully completed enterprise wide interoperability testing.Augmented an image processing application for display of Magnetic Resonance and Computerized Tomography images of blood vessels in the brain while at the University of Alabama (UAB) Medical Center. The result was greatly improved perception by Neurologists of vessel abnormalities.
Birmingham, Al, Us
Developed innovative applications for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance imaging research while at UAB. Gave numerous presentations and published original research in automated image processing in major international journals.A seminal publication directly cited 53 times to date can be found at PubMed.gov.
Consulted with Siemens to review design of a new Nuclear Cardiology image processing workstation.
Elmhurst, Illinois, Us
Investigated check imaging capabilities.
Invented Nuclear Cardiology dynamic image acquisition control software and developed image processing applications while with Medical Data Systems. Collaboration with Johns Hopkins resulted in a Multiple Gated Acquisition (MUGA - Storage limitations at the time required program names have only four letters, all caps.) technique for dynamically imaging the heart non-invasively that is still in use today. Received an Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Biomedical Engineering recognition from Medtronic for this effort. The first description published was an abstract in the American Journal of Cardiology.H.W. Strauss, H.R. Singleton, R.D. Burow, et al; Multiple gated acquisition (MUGA): An improved noninvasive technique for evaluation of regional wall motion and left ventricular function; American Journal of Cardiology 39:284, 1977See Wikipedia:A MUGA scan (multigated acquisition scan) is a nuclear medicine test designed to evaluate the function of the right and left ventricles of the heart, thus allowing informed diagnostic intervention in heart failure.
