Daily management of all operation sides of the Voice and data side of the telecom group. I have overall responsibility for the company's PABX, Nortel IVR's as well as the local and wide area networks. The LAN and WAN supports Voice over IP for all voice communications on the Avaya 8700 Platform. I manage a team of 8 staff, 1 based in Glasgow, 1 based in Rotherham and 6 in Basildon. I am responsible for overseeing all work into the team and managing all project activity. . Key responsibilities-Incident Management. Part of my responsibilities is to mange departmental service issues that have been prioritised by the incident management team. This is both during normal business hours and out of hours as I like to have all service issues reported to me by my team when they are contacted by the command centres.Change Management. All changes by the Telecom team are reviewed by me; key items are the risk and impact to our clients and their service as well as the content of the change.Project Management. Weekly team meetings with the team keep not only the team but I am updated on the progress of all projects. I prefer any escalation of project delays to be reviewed by myself with the team before it is passed out of the group, in this way we have the opportunity to mitigate or find alternative items to keep projects on track.Network Design. A key part for the team is to oversee all design of new network connections to ensure that the company standards and strategies are met. These designs can be from a simple connection onto the MPLS infrastructure or a complete data centre build. Staff Appraisals. Regular one to one reviews with each member of the team. Identify any technical and personnel development. This is also an ideal opportunity to discuss poor performance and document a recovery plan to improve performance. Budgets I am responsible for the department's capital and operating budget, which is approx £5.5 million per year.

The team leader role entailed day to day operations of the UK telecom environment. This role also included staff appraisals and resource planning for projects. Hiring and managing performance issues were excluded at this level. A key responsibility in this role was also the technical lead for the group. In this capacity planning the grown of the network was important to the reliability and performance of the networks. These key skills were put into good effect in pre-sales support with new and existing clients. I would attend technical workshops with clients to design and engineer network connects to meet the requirements for their business with First Data. I designed and managed the change of the company's Local Area Network from ATM & Token ring over to a new switched Ethernet environment to improve performance and scalability. Here I gained experience in Ethernet predominantly Cisco Switched environment with 6500, 5500 4500 3750 & 4000 switches at Layer 2 & 3.Cisco routers 800, 1600, 2600,2800, 3600, 3700, 3800 and 7200. I developed a sound working knowledge of TCP IP networking with a good understanding of Firewall technologies including Checkpoint.These networks support Novel, TCP IP and SNA protocols over Ethernet and Token Ring LANs. On the wide area side I have large experience in point to point leased lines, SMDS, ISDN, X,25, ATM, MPLS, Internet VPN's and frame relay; These networks use two key routing protocols OSPF & EIGRP which I troubleshoot and design expansion on a regular basis. CA Unicentre, HP Openview and Concord E-health are used to monitor these Networks.My most significant deliverable during this period was the complete migration of a Data centre from Essex to Yorkshire. This included the Design, implementation and migration of all network services to support cross site communication and Disaster recovery for this IBM, UNIX and Intel environment.

FDI changed direct from traditional IBM environments to more open networks using TCP IP. Here I started to develop my skills in Cisco technologies moving away from TDM and STM environments.

I moved from network support into a pure telecoms environment focusing on point to point circuits. Here I had my training and introduction into TDM & STM technologies as well as Packet switching using X.25 Here I install the first local area network at First Data using UTP cable and Token Ring. This was a huge break away from the more traditional IBM type 1 cable.

The move from network control to network support was a conscious change for me to move off shift to day work so that I could start a family. The network support role was based around the implementation and support of IBM Cluster controllers and Communications controllers. On call support for Network Control to assist in VTAM and NCP line issues.

The senior role meant that I had the additional responsibility for a shift of 3 including myself completing MIS data for the Operations Shift managersNetwork Controller 1979 1981The network control function was looking after the monitoring and 1st line support for NCP, Line and dumb terminal issues. Implementation of NCP changes on the IBM SNA communications controllers

Progressing from the trainee role here I was responsible for daily operation of the mainframes and scheduling of the overnight batch cycles.

Starting from School into First data this was my first role in IT using IBM 148 & 158 mainframes on a 24 x 7 shift pattern.
