About Hadi Afsharan

As a Westeran Australia's Innovation Fellow and postdoctoral research associate at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, I apply my knowledge in optical and biomedical engineering to develop innovative solutions for biomedical challenges. I have over two years of experience in conducting cutting-edge research in biophotonics, optical design, and biosensors, and have published multiple papers in prestigious journals. In addition to my research skills, I have demonstrated my teaching and leadership abilities as a teaching assistant and a design project facilitator at UWA, where I led, supported, and mentored teams of students in various engineering courses. I am passionate about using my knowledge and skills to advance the field of biomedical engineering and contribute to the improvement of human health and well-being. I am always eager to learn new techniques, collaborate with diverse experts, and tackle complex problems with creativity and rigor.

My Ph.D. is basically focused on using an imaging technique called optical coherence tomography (OCT) to non-invasively image the retina (back of the eye) to investigate the presence of any abnormalities. I use an extension of OCT called polarisation sensitive OCT which essentially adds another dimension to OCT images. Using PS-OCT, it is possible to quantitatively measure birefringence- an optical property that is associated with the structure or organization of the tissue. Birefringence changes in the retinal blood vessel walls can be monitored and imaged as a biomarker in different diseases. Since the retina works as a window to the heart and brain (it has similar vasculature and nerve system) and can be imaged readily and non-invasively, it can be used to assess any disorders especially those related to the heart and brain. In particular, cardiovascular diseases affect the blood vessel walls and have an impact on the integrity of blood vessels and capillaries in the retina. And because blood vessel walls consist of organized fibrous tissue, they have intrinsic polarisation dependant optical properties – e.g. birefringence. As cardiovascular disease disrupts the organization and structure of the fibrous tissue, hence altering birefringence, assessment of this change has the potential to diagnose cardiovascular disorders at the very early stages. So, in short, my Ph.D. topic is about differentiating healthy blood vessels of the retina from diseased ones through non-invasive and quick PS-OCT images.
