My research is to investigate new methods of protection for structural concrete, specifically for highway bridges and coastal marine structures, mainly to prevent further deterioration from the climatic loading they are subjected to. This research involves a variety of parameters and laboratory simulations to identify a suitable protection material, whether it be a coating or a hydrophobic impregnation to better protect our structures. In additon to my research demands, I am heavily involved with teaching and supervising of undergraduates with their degree specifically with structural engineering related modules. I have also been involved with there construction projects in which the undergraduates were tasked to build a 1:5 scaled version of Kingsgate bridge designed by Ove Arup. This took place in Norfolk at Constructionarium and my responsibilities was to oversee the project and ensure that all aspects of the construction adhered to drawings. I found this particularly advantageous as I experienced at first hand the difficulties that contractors can experience with projects. Show less
