Over the course of two summer internships, my team and I studied deep neural network (DNN) convergence properties, specifically the minibatch size/convergence rate tradeoff and the effects on parallelized DNN training.• Designed a variant of stochastic gradient descent that overlaps computation with communication and analyzed the algorithm’s scalability on benchmark datasets (MNIST, CIFAR, ImageNet) and across network architectures. • Implemented the parallel SGD training algorithm on an IBM HPC cluster for a collaborating research group, reducing total training time for their network from 2 weeks to 4 days. Working with a team of researchers from various prestigious academic institutions around the US, we created a framework for classifying human-object interactions in videos using a combination of actor and object features. These features were combined using Multiple-Kernel Learning to produce results comparable to the state-of-the-art in human-object interaction classification. Our work was published and presented at the ICPR 2014 conference in Stockholm, Sweden.

In collaboration with the Senior Scientific Director and a team of microbiologists at ContraFect , I developed and validated an automated high-throughput system for executing laboratory protocols in accordance with clinical laboratory standards. The system used existing robotics technology at the lab to increase the efficiency of completing select laboratory protocols by 60%.
