I worked in the Hollis Lab investigating the role of SPARC in microglia and astrocyte cellular remodeling after spinal cord injury (SCI). I used immunohistochemistry and IMARIS software to create and analyze 3D reconstructions of microglia and astrocytes. I was also involved in an astrocyte primary cell culture project. I attended weekly seminars to learn about neurological research at other institutions as well as lunches with the speakers to ask questions about their science and career journeys. I engaged in weekly lab meetings, hearing about ongoing projects in the lab and also participating in the monthly data blitzes. At the end of the summer, I created a poster for the summer student poster symposium and gave a talk summarizing my work to members of the Institute and the general community.

I worked with the CEO to write a grant proposal for a TGF-ß inhibitor to treat long COVID. I found references with preliminary data on the inhibitor, information on long COVID characteristics, and TGF-ß’s role in promoting specific symptoms to present sufficient scientific reasoning in the grant. I also facilitated communicated with researchers to determine a suitable animal model for collaboration.

I engaged in a 7-week leadership course based on The Student Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes / Barry Posner. I practiced goal-setting and learned 5 essential leadership practices through insightful discussions with athletic coaches and fellow student-athletes. At the closing ceremony, I presented my reflections to the coaches and other athletes.
