The Immigrant and Employee Rights Section enforces the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Assisted in litigation and investigation of employment discrimination, conducted legal research, prepared legal memoranda, monitored compliance with applicable federal statutes, and participated in witness interviews.

Analyzed federal legislation and conduct legal research. Monitored and responded to legislative, regulatory, and other policy developments, including congressional hearings and markups, federal rulemakings, and relevant litigation. Drafted policy and advocacy materials such as bill analyses, fact sheets, and talking points for use in lobbying. Focused efforts primarily within the House Armed Services Committee.

Served in the Vaccine Litigation Section in the Civil Division defending the Secretary of Health and Human Services in lawsuits filed in the United States Court of Federal Claims alleging vaccine-related injury under the National Childhood Vaccine Act of 1986. Cases routinely involve claims of catastrophic injuries or death, and the vast majority involve competing medical expert witnesses and theories of causation. Completed multiple substantive assignments including drafting a motion for summary judgment, Rule4(c) reports and motion to dismiss (pleadings setting forth the government's view of salient facts and applicable law in response to a petition for compensation), memoranda for the Director of the Torts branch explaining rationale for settlement in a case, a research project regarding 21st Century Cures Act, memoranda regarding evidentiary hierarchy, and a research project on administrative law exploring relevant legislative history.

Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina Area

• Conducted legal, public policy, and public health research relating to the new public housing smoking ban enacted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development set to take effect in 2018 with Dr. Kristie Foley and Dr. Sunday Azagba. • Wrote memoranda, participated in stakeholder discussions, and spearheaded the design of a multi-state questionnaire regarding policy implementation and compliance.

• Reviewed research protocols that come from faculty, staff, or students at Davidson. The IRB has authority to review and approve, require appropriate modifications to, or disapprove human subject research in accordance with 45 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 46 and Davidson College policy.

• Conducted a psychology study investigating factors that influence perceptions of women who confront sexism within healthcare settings• Assessed the relationship between benevolent sexism, participant gender, perceptions of warmth, and perceptions of competence using statistical measures• Co-authored a chapter for publication regarding research methodologies for measuring ambivalent sexism• Awarded $3,000 by the George L. Abernethy Endowment at Davidson College

• Assisted in writing a systematic review on risk prediction for acute kidney injury and end-stage renal disease with the Program in Professionalism and Ethics• Researched principles of healthcare reform in relation to changes in medical malpractice• Attended clinical ethics consults, participated in bioethics lecture series, and shadowed surgical procedures in Heart Rhythm Clinic and Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

• Assisted in collecting physiological, demographic, and survey data for two senior thesis research students within a tutorial course (PSY 331). Used BioPac, Acqknowledge, and SuperLab programs to collect data for review• Independently ran approximately 25% of each student’s participant pool. Participated in discussions regarding methodologies to strengthen research practices

• Assisted in conducting a state contract report summarizing the current research detailing the risks and benefits of early diagnosing and labeling in children• Assisted in writing a literature review. This review details short and long term health, mental health, social implications, and state services related to early diagnosis and treatment for children.• Assisted in letter campaign for generating awareness of mental health issues.
