About Hakeem Meyer

I started my 28-year Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting career at Cape Town International Airport (CAT 9 ) and advanced to Fire Chief. My primary responsibility was to drive operational efficiency and performance and maintain CAT 9 compliance. Furthermore, develop skilled firefighters, and manage the department’s budget and assets in line with the company’s policies and procedures. In this portfolio, I forcefully maintained the rules and regulations detailed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Additionally, I held the position of Head of Department for Airside Safety, managing a team responsible for implementing, and monitoring safety compliance, including, aircraft loading/handling, aircraft refueling, and Occupational Health and Safety procedures. And lastly, effectively promoting and implementing the company’s safety culture.Due to my first-hand experience in aircraft Accidents and Incidents, and my ability to formulate strategies, I was appointment as Department Head Emergency Management Systems, devising the Aerodrome Emergency Plans. These plans detailed – Structural Fires / Release of Hazardous Materials / Release of Bulk Fuels / Acts of Aggression / Aircraft Accidents and Hostage Negotiations. This required the coordination of stakeholders and governmental agencies for real-time crisis management and mock exercises. Also, providing professional advice to the Emergency Operations Centre and Incident Command Teams. During this time, I equipped myself with various certifications including – Incident Command, Fire & Emergency Management, Safety Management Systems, Aircraft Incident & Accident Investigation, and Airport Business Operation’s to name a few.In addition, I acquired international experience working in Saudi Arabia as the Fire Chief for Al Bait Towers, the Largest and 3rd tallest building in the world. In addition, I worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo, for Pacific Architects and Engineering (PAE) contracted by the United Nations, as a Senior Fire Officer responsible for Fire Fighter and training. Recently, I was afforded the opportunity to work in the UEA as the Chief Fire Officer for Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, ensuring effective Incident Command and compliance to the high standards of the GCAA (General Civil Aviation Authority). My experience has molded me into a competent individual who gained effective firefighting skills and a progressive approach to team management and leadership.
