As a PW2 at Barnardo's SASUYP (Supported Accommodation Service for Unaccompanied Young People) I work as a keyworker with unaccompanied, asylum-seeking young people. SASUYP is a service for 16–21-year-olds where unaccompanied young people reside in their own flats whilst receiving regular keywork sessions and support to help them reach full independence. We use ongoing review processes to provide young people with targeted session work to help them achieve the independent skills necessary to move out into the community. This role also involves managing and directing review processes, risk assessments and care and support plans we develop and write in cooperation with young people. These help to make sure that staff direct session-work efficiently to meet young peoples’ personal needs and goals. We collaborate and work with statutory services and other organisations to advocate for young people and ensure that they receive appropriate care and support. This communication is done through meetings, phone calls and emails. I also take part in organising and facilitating workshops to educate groups of young people on subjects like Cost of Living, Drugs & Alcohol, Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships.

I played a key role as coordinator of a project called The Care Leavers Manifesto for Barnardo's. The purpose of the project was to conduct research about relevant young people's experience of Care/Leaving Care services in Northern Ireland. The project was conducted in line with Barnardo’s core values and aimed to elicit what young people believe worked for them and what they believe could be improved/delivered more effectively. I organised young people-lead focus groups, one-to-one sessions, and meetings. I managed and directed 3 student social workers who helped to conduct these sessions with young people within services/after-care services. After many sessions were conducted between common themes were generated, and possible solutions/changes were discussed and developed. This work was then analysed, corroborated and used as the core basis of ‘The Care Leavers Manifesto: What About Us?’ which is a document consisting of a 'list of asks' which includes the conclusions of the work mentioned and recommendations for policy makers and organizations to help to create system change. (Available upon request)The aim was to attempt to ensure that services for Young People can be improved and work in a way that is most effective for them; the people who have the most experience and personal understanding of the system. We presented the manifesto to the head of the Northern Irish Independent Care Review and several NI politicians in Stormont. It is hoped that it can be continued as a vehicle for change and a way of making sure services can be informed by the voices and opinions of the young people who use them.

My role involved providing support for care-experienced young people in a supported-living setting. Support involved organising and providing 1-1 keywork sessions and groupwork that helps to provide young people with care experience the independent skills needed to survive and prosper when they eventually move into a community setting. Young peoples' needs are assessed via the Outcome Star model which looks at the different areas essential for independent living; Accommodation, Work and learning, People and support, Health, How you feel, Choices and behaviour, Money and Practical life skills. This assessment allows for better targeted session work to help guide areas for improvement to try and get young people the right help for the right areas of their life. I was involved in this assessment and induction process for multiple young people and gained skills in understanding the development and progression of young people. I also gained further experience with safeguarding, statutory procedure, confidentiality, risk assessment, recording and relevant processes. Working in this role has added to my awareness of and understanding of the factors and issues faced by care-experienced young people from many different backgrounds.

I worked as part of a team utilising mapping and legal data in the development of large infrastructure projects in the UK. Throughout the day I would deal with multiple projects, managing my own time to ensure that all tasks were completed and all deadlines were met. Using CAD, Microsoft Office and databasing software, along with data from The Land Registry and other sources, I analysed, collated and created data regarding land ownership and use. My role also involved communicating with relevant parties via phone and email to investigate and confirm information that had been provided to us regarding land data. As well as working independently, a fundamental aspect of the working day was collaborating with other members of the team to meet joint objectives. My role also involved going on site visits; travelling to different sites around the UK to work with members of the public directly. These visits involved gaining further insight into project areas through site inspections, posting notices, speaking with land-owners and delivering questionnaires

Whilst in the Testing department of Plymouth Grove blood centre I worked as part of a team screening donated blood platelets for bacteria. Through the use of aseptic techniques, specialised machinery (BactAlert) and software (PULSE) I incubated donated blood platelet samples and screened then to ensure they were safe to use in patients. The role also involved communication with other labs and sending samples off to the NBL for further analysis. I gained training and experience in SOPs and LEAN manufacturing

I worked alongside pupils with ASD who required extra support, helping students to work to the best of their ability, be safe in the classroom and deal with challenging behaviours. During my employment with Quality Teachers I worked as a support worker in several residential care settings around Greater Manchester. Here I worked supporting children and young people in care, many of whom with Emotional Behavioural Disorders, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Special Educational Needs. I was responsible for supporting young peoples' emotional welfare, helping to encourage positive behaviours, building life-skills, de-escalating conflicts and helping with day-to-day running of the residence. This also included cooking for them, playing games, cleaning up and often working waking-night shifts to provide support throughout the night. This gave me essential experience in supporting, caring, behaviour management, conflict resolution, diplomacy and education.
