My passions: “leading teams” and “making things work better.” I love working on hard problems with smart, engaged coworkers. These days I get to do that at Fairlead, where we solve hard engineering problems for our customers every day. I’m also passionate about learning, and making business work better. Lately I’m doing that in the realm of data science and data analytics - application of technology to visualize relevant business data, and using data to make better, faster business decisions. I’m teaching myself the R programming language through the Johns Hopkins Data Science Specialization. It’s helping me rethink everything we are doing at work – assessment of project management status, financial forecasting, and creating technical documents faster. My experience has helped me to span the different dimensions of business problems – from the strategic issues facing a general manager to the detailed challenges of actually getting work done. I’m comfortable all along the spectrum of the workforce, from the deck plate to the boardroom to the customer. These different perspectives and experiences give me lots of new ideas on ways to ask and answer data science questions in the business environment, all in the interest of “getting things done”.
