Dec 2006 - Oct 2014

Programmer Analyst

Ames, Iowa

In charge of the collection and refinement of Federal Census, BEA and other complex socio-economic statistical information. Gathered massive data sets from federal government web sites and then loaded into a local SQL Server database and arrange the information so that Sociologists and Economists at Iowa State University could reuse data in a meaningful way in order to write grants. Once data was tabulated from distributed locations across the web, users could dynamically build datasets and chose to either display them in a tabular form, dynamically graph the results, or download thanks to a VB.NET web application that I had written from scratch. Was responsible for the hiring, evaluation and direction of two technical part-time staff.

Sep 2003 - Dec 2006

Co-Founder, Website & Database Designer

Opencom/Isunet

Boone, Iowa & Ames, Iowa

In August of 1996 (started planning efforts earlier in 1996 however), several college acquaintances and I started an Internet Service Provider (OpenCom) in Boone, Iowa and then quickly ramped up a second location in Ames, Iowa that ran under the name ISUNet. An essential part of the planning and operations of the business and assisted with the business plan, provided technical expertise and funding, and was the software/web site/database/imaging resource that got the operation going. My role with OpenCom/ISUNet was mostly a nights/weekends effort (which I truly loved) as I had other full-time jobs during this time frame. In October 2002, I became a full-time employee of OpenCom but instead of doing software and web site development, I focused on sales and marketing (neither of which are my strong points). In August of 2003, I left OpenCom in pursuit of software development interests elsewhere. http://www.opencom.net/

Jun 1996 - Aug 2003

Senior Web Applications Developer

Ames, Iowa

Wrote and maintained an integrated ordering/inventory/reporting systems using mod PERL, running on an Apache web server, using first mySQL (then converted all database activity to Oracle), all running on RedHat. (A 100% RedHat Linux shop.) I led and directed a team of up to 12 programmers in the maintenance and enhancement of a internally built product called "NetOrder" that allowed many different seed and chemical companies in the Agricultural market to share corporate order and supply information with distributed locations (grain elevators, seed dealers, etc). The open source and GNU philosophies are very refreshing as they allow clear and open communication with developers and other staff. We never had need for the excuse to blame some external software entity locking us into a certain version/dll/etc since we had the freedom to upgrade and fix/patch things ourselves via programming. http://www.e-markets.com/

Aug 1998 - Oct 2002

Programmer

Cds - Communications Data Services

Des Moines, Iowa

Enhanced and maintained COBOL on an AS/400 Magazine Fulfillment system and internal account systems written in FoxPro and other client/server applications using PowerBuilder querying an Oracle database. Preferred the client/server and web based software solutions.
