I previously worked at Maple Rise Academy in Cache Valley, Utah. Maple Rise is an academy for girls 13-18 who need help to develop emotional balance in their lives. Since working here, I have been able to assist these girls in gaining skills to better manage their emotions, navigate through adolescence in positive ways, and to help them create healthy and balanced lives for themselves. The opportunity to work side-by-side with these girls has helped me better understand that there is more to a person than what we see. An important learning opportunity in this job is working side by side with the student’s therapist to better learn how to communicate with the girls and help implement the skills they have been learning.

I have had the incredible experience of working as an intern in the counseling department of Mountain Crest High School. As I participated in this 300-hour internship, I was able to develop my leadership skills by leading groups on stress management. From this experience, I learned to vary my communications style in one on one conversations, sometimes sensitive, and other times more assertive (as required), in order to have the most impactful discussion with the students. As an intern, I was in charge of the 2.0 program at the school. This program included all the students in the school that had a GPA of 2.0 or below. As we met weekly with these students, we discussed grades, we got to know one another and we learned to work together to help the students achieve their goals. In addition to meeting with these students, I made contacts with parents to keep them informed of their child's progress and I corresponded with teachers to unify our goals to help the kids. This experience has really helped me to see my strengths and identify opportunities where I can learn and improve. The net result is that it has solidified my desire to be a school counselor.
