I have been both witness and testament to the impact of opposing, effective and null, teaching strategies within metropolitan and diverse settings. My goal is to be both coordinator and researcher, so I may continue to uplift, heal, educate, and empower communities of color in STEM fields.Through work in education research, I have obtained the skills necessary to appropriately gage student and program success, propelling me closer to creating programs that service underserved and under recognized communities. Students need to understand the value, relevance and necessity of STEM education and careers. In addition, they need to be nurtured and provided the time, mentorship and additional resources to gain confidence in their understanding of the materials presented. I am currently working on a Master’s in Education Research, Assessment and Learning Theory and, with this, I will be able to assess the efficacy of STEM programs and curriculum (as well as determine the retention rates of students participants) to help bridge the gap within the STEM education to STEM career pipeline for underserved and/or underprivileged communities. In the fall of 2024, I begin my PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at George Washington University, studying STEM education within the urban DCPS community. I am determined to do the work to get to the most impactful position of change for intersecting underserved communities and science education. Every student deserves the chance excel in their studies. Through community work, mentorship, research-based curriculum and use of informal programs, such as summer internships, we can create future leaders and critical thinkers ready to tackle the issues left behind by previous generations.
