Haley Owen is a Human Development and Social Relations (HDSR) major with a social institutions concentration at Earlham College. She will graduate in December 2022. The HDSR major focuses on how individuals interact in context with social systems and how culture influences human development. Through classes, work, and volunteering, Haley has experience in facilitating groups, working with children, designing research projects, and creating informational materials. As a camp counselor, Haley mediated disputes, devised creative, play-based learning activities, and communicated with campers, parents, and other staff. She has attended workshops on leadership including the Midwest Outdoor Leadership Conference, and she has volunteered with educational programs at Morrisson-Reeves Library and Richmond Friends School. In college courses, Haley conducted qualitative and quantitative research including a micro-level social observation, interview, and analysis study applying organizational psychology frameworks to analyze human systems. She also has experience working in customer service and addressing concerns with both empathy and composure.As an HDSR major studying organizational systems and public institutions, Haley is learning about how formal and informal systems affect the individuals within them and how those individuals influence those systems. Her goal is to work in the education field where she would like to build upon her experiences from her major, as well as utilize and further develop her communications, problem-solving, and facilitative leadership skills to work with students and help them grow.
