About Haley Smestad
No matter the situation I always try to adhere to the words “Do Your Best.” It may sound cliché but I have found that it prevents complacency and is the only way I know what I am capable of. During my time at Cianbro Corporation this "motto" was the reason I could excel at a variety of tasks in a variety of group settings. This included the digitalization of the work accomplished during boiler outages to make future outages run more efficiently and help foremen more easily plan the work. I also spent time with the estimating team aiding in submitting multimillion dollar bids as well as the HR department evaluating target locations for advertising job openings. Following my time at Cianbro I started as an engineer in the pharmaceutical industry. As someone who had traditionally avoided biology with a 10-foot pole, I had a lot to learn quickly. Fortunately being part of a consulting firm allowed me to work with a variety of client companies in a short period of time. This enabled me to see that there were multiple ways to accomplish the same task and work on my soft skills of client relations. In January of 2021, I decided to take a sabbatical and explore opportunities outside of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Engineering industry. Like many others, I decided that I preferred the work-life balance that remote work offered, and taking the drug processing equipment is understandably not a thing. Therefore I focused on pivoting to a different industry specifically learning to program and using that knowledge to build small web apps for practice. Now I am developing my skills in software engineering and data engineering as part of the Whetstone AI team. This new chapter of my professional career allows me to continue to explore and learn constantly while still encouraging me to stick to my aforementioned motto of "Do Your Best."
Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Microsoft Excel, Research, and 14 others.

Data Engineer
Worked on a variety of projects in a variety of industries in the capacity of a Project Manager and/or a Data Engineer and Analyst.
Project Engineer
During my time at Sequence I supported two primary projects. The most recent was supporting the start-up of an Arranta Bio facility. The project utilized a risk-based approach for commissioning, qualification, and validation (CQV). The first part of the project entailed the creation of detailed risk assessments using the FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) strategy for each piece of equipment and system in the facility. The second part of the project was the drafting and execution of CQV documents. The equipment I specifically supported included: Lyophilizers, UFDF Skids, Single Use MIxers, WFI System, and Clean Steam system. I also supported the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for the UFDF Skid. Prior to the Arranta Bio project, I supported Alnylam. I was brought in for traceability of the punch list items to ensure that automation testing covered all design specifications. I also compared the punch list with executed protocols to evaluate any potential gaps in testing.
Engineer Ii
For the majority of 2019 into the beginning of 2020, I was at Immunomedics in Morris Plains, NJ. I started out supporting a Site Master Planning effort for the future of the facility. This primarily involved architectural drawing modifications and the creation of some P&IDs in AutoCAD. From here I supported a Preventive Maintenance effort in order to create PM programs for all of the equipment at the facility. Then I started to directly support the Engineering department at Immunomedics. This included a wide range of activities where I tracked engineering change controls and completed deliverables for items such as the implementation of new equipment and single-use materials. I also supported the site drawings by performing edits and adding title blocks for initial approval. From there I was responsible for making the changes to drawings for any site drawing updates. This was a fantastic experience where I was able to interface with many different people from many different departments and really expand my exposure to everything it takes to try to go through the drug approval process. In the first part of 2019 I helped to support a design-build effort for Conagen. I worked on assisting a Mechanical Engineering P.E. on creating the drawings needed for permit filing and assisting with the associated process calculations. At the end of 2018, I supported a massive decommissioning effort at Sanofi Genzyme in Allston MA. In 2018 I supported Agilent Technologies in Boulder Colorado. While on this site I supported a number of different projects. Specifically, I supported the procurement and asset management of new reaction vessels and the associated documentation. I also supported the Factory Acceptance Test of a Lyophilization Unit and the drafting of SOPs for the new Unit.
Engineer I
In 2018 I had the opportunity to work on a design-build project at Dow Chemical. Hyde partnered with Amec Foster Wheeler for this project to put together a BOD package for the expansion of some warehouse space for additional chemical processing. My role specifically was to perform process calculations for some general sizing and assist with the layout using AutoCAD. During 2017 I worked at Pfizer in the Suite CD group. My role was to assist on four ongoing projects: design and procurement of two new chromatography skids, installation and validation of two buffer transfer lines to reduce a bottleneck, qualification and modifications to an existing Ultrafiltration skid requiring me to work closely with the quality group and modifications to an ethanol tank to increase functionality. My first project at Hyde was for the detailed design of a water system. The aging water system in the facility no longer suited the client needs and ran the risk of not supplying enough WFI grade and UPS grade water. Throughout the project I assisted with developing the URS for new WFI stills, and recommendations for other equipment including carbon filters, RO, EDI and UV. During this project I also developed layouts and implementation plans to minimize facility downtime.
Office Assistant
As the Office Assistant for WPI Social Science and Policy Studies Department I had some more traditional responsibilities such as restocking paper, shredding documents and sorting the mail. However I also had some less traditional responsibilities which enabled me to be creative by designing various T-Shirts, a fast learner by figuring out how new software worked and how to relay what I learned in order to support the faculty however I could.
Engineering Intern
While working at Veolia I worked in a team charged with walking down a Steam Processing Plant to update outdated Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams using AutoCad.
Engineering Intern
As an Engineering Intern at Cianbro my responsibilities varied immensely during the three summers I worked there.During the initial orientation I received my OSHA 10 card but what was more memorable was the exposure to the work Cianbro did. The interns including myself were giving the opportunity to learn basic signaling, the use of acetylene torches, using a jack hammer, basic surveying, assembling scaffolding while being properly tied off as well as many other items all while keeping safety as the highest priority. Initially I was working at the Sappi Paper Mill in Hinckley Maine. My responsibilities included assisting the Project Engineer, assisting the General Foreman with estimates, completing change orders and providing documentation of work to make future estimates easier. During some outages I was given the opportunity to crawl inside various boilers and take photos for documentation purposes. Later on I worked with the New England Estimating group where I went on site visits aiding on documenting what we saw. I performed calculation such as the amount of steel that would need to be removed from a specific job of interest using the drawings provided by the potential client. As Cianbro has an extremely high dedication to the safety of its team members it was a wonderful experience when I was asked to join on a site x-ray which entailed a multi-day in depth walk through of the site noting areas where the team members were excelling as well as what were areas of improvement.
