I began my journey as a new graduate nurse in the HVICU at Miami Valley Hospital in 2019. My first year as a nurse was about building foundational skills, interacting with other disciplines, and learning how to effectively treat patients with a multitude of illnesses. I was becoming increasingly more comfortable with the industry standards regarding patient care. However, during my second year of being a nurse, the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 caused those industry standards to change. I was forced to adapt to the changing guidelines regarding the care of diverse patient populations. My abilities as a nurse were recognized by my management team before I even finished my second year as a nurse. I was one of the few chosen to become an ECMO specialist. ECMO was a new therapy introduced to my place of employment at the time, and it was frequently used in the care of critical COVID-19 patients. After being exposed to a variety of acute situations, I now feel comfortable administering treatment to any patient that I am assigned to. Now that I'm entering my third year of being a nurse, my desire is to pursue a different direction in nursing.
