Our lab focuses on a rare disease of infants called biliary atresia; a neonatal cholangiopathy that progresses to end stage liver disease. Ultimately, liver transplantation is required for patient survival. We are interested in understanding what causes biliary atresia in these infants and believe that viral insult may trigger an immune response leading to bile duct inflammation and disease onset. Personally, I investigate new and existing literature to develop new hypotheses regarding our model, as well as to learn and implement new protocols. I am also responsible for maintaining mouse colonies, consisting of over 10 unique strains. Along with this, I perform viral experiments on the mice, including infection, symptom tracking, and organ harvests. In collaboration with my coworkers, I assist in writing grants and have authored multiple publications including a first author publication regarding intracellular viral trafficking pathways.

I worked as a laboratory technician in my final year of undergraduate school. The laboratory focused on the pathways of breast cancer metastasis. I worked in a lab searching for a treatment to slow the progression of Gaucher's Disease. The goal of my project was to find a way to insert neural precursor stem cells into the brain and have them differentiate into more specific neural cells eliminating or reducing the affect of Gaucher's disease on the brain. In this position, I worked closely with a postdoctoral fellow and my lab mentor to carry out a variety of lab functions. -Maintain a population of mice-Inject mice with drugs and saline-Perform mouse dissections-Harvest tissue and blood samples from mice-Analyze and record behavior in mice-Perform DNA assays and PCR as well as gel electrophoresis and cell lysis-Maintain a population of cells, including pluripotent stem cells-Determine protein activity and enzyme concentration-Perform Western blots

I worked closely with a Principal Investigator to organize her laboratory. The research focused on the effect of natural light and the human reproduction cycle. Doctor Vitzthum collected urine and saliva samples to conduct this research.-Organized over 5,000 samplesI also worked with a postdoctoral researcher that was interested in how the location of a home affected female activities throughout the day in third world countries. -Input written data to Excel
