Profile bio

About Haley Willis

I am currently working as a video journalist with the Visual Investigations team at The New York Times, which combines traditional reporting with digital and open source methods to break news and hold the powerful to account.I have covered police brutality in Hong Kong, the U.S. and India, humanitarian crises in Syria and Mozambique, and forced labor in China. I also co-produced Day of Rage, the most complete picture to date of what happened during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, and El Chapo's Son: The Siege of Culiacán, an episode of The Times' documentary series The Weekly. Some of my most recent work includes investigations into the war in Ukraine, civilian casualties resulting from the U.S. air war in the Middle East, and police killings during traffic stops. These and other stories have received two Pulitzer Prizes, two George Polk Awards, and a News Emmy Award.Prior to joining The Times in 2019 as part of its inaugural fellowship class, I worked as an open source researcher with the Human Rights Center at Berkeley Law and as a project manager with Amnesty International’s Digital Verification Corps — contributing to investigations that tracked the sale of French arms to Egypt, reconstructed a siege on a university and church in Managua, Nicaragua, and documented torture by security forces in Cameroon.
