Dr. Hashim Al Hassan is a passionate power engineering leader with over 13 years of experience in the power industry, spanning R&D, applications engineering, product management, project development, project management, and execution. Currently, he serves as the Director of Power Systems Analysis at UtilityInnovation Group (UIG), where he leads various microgrid modeling and cutting-edge research, front-end engineering & design, and technical strategy efforts for large energy users such as utilities and data centers.Before joining UIG, Dr. Al Hassan worked as an Innovation Product Manager for American Tower, where he developed new business initiatives and products in the power and energy space, leveraging American Tower's real estate holdings.Prior to American Tower, Hashim was part of the founding team at Switched Source, LLC, a hard tech company focused on bringing "The next generation of electric distribution automation" to increase reliability, efficiency, and the system's capacity for hosting renewable and distributed energy resources. He held various roles, concluding with Director of Applications Engineering, where he was responsible for utility-scale project deployments, utility systems product applications, system studies, and related R&D activities.Earlier in his career, Dr. Al Hassan led multiple projects at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) Energy GRID Institute, solving complex challenges facing electric power transmission and distribution systems. He collaborated with pioneers from Pitt and companies/organizations such as Mitsubishi Electric Co. (Japan), DOE, and Eaton Co. to develop innovations that addressed emerging problems in power electronics-based power systems. During his time at Pitt, Dr. Al Hassan was awarded his first patent.Dr. Al Hassan has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed technical papers. He served as a reviewer for multiple IEEE journals and conferences and has served as a Topic Chair for the IEEE ECCE conference. Dr. Al Hassan delivered multiple seminars and presentations at various IEEE conferences, chapters, and other venues. He also served as the Chair of the IEEE Power Electronics Society's Pittsburgh Chapter between 2021-2022.
