About Halid Can Yıldırım, Phd

I study the characterisation of advanced materials to ensure research-based results for safe, smart, sustainable and durable engineering design. The main frame of my research incorporates mechanics of materials to develop innovative methodologies for using metals in infrastructure. That is physical infrastructure involving bridges, buildings, offshores, and all sorts of other metal infrastructure in which we live and work.I find one way to tackle this problem by using what we call a multi-scale approach. That is starting from the material levels. In fact, there are levels within the material treatment as well, that is from nano level all the way to the macro in which I try to come up with innovations and materials that have better properties under severe environments and that have durability characteristics. At the same time, the energy savings issues, and the energy conservation issues are obviously some of the main motivations in material manufacturing, as well as during a lifecycle. I find the combination of experimental research and modelling of structural materials ranging from small-scale (material level) to full-scale (complete structures) as my common approach. My main research interests are, but not limited to:• Material testing and modelling• Fatigue of structures• Corrosion• Fracture mechanics• Fatigue performance improvement methods• Lightweight design• Realistic service loading• Finite element methodI am willing to collaborate on the above mentioned topics.
