Over the past 30 years as a lawyer, I have developed an expertise in helping clients avoid and resolve legal conflicts in a number of areas. I began my career as a litigator and I still enjoy a good courtroom battle, especially a jury trial. I added business law in 1997 when the lawyer I was sharing office space with left to pursue a business venture and asked me to take over his business law practice. I still help many of those clients today. I particularly enjoy buying and selling businesses. There are many commonalities between litigation and deal making - a sound knowledge of the law is required, thinking and reacting quickly on the fly, the art of persuasion and organization and attention to detail.In 2006 I added aboriginal and environmental law to my repertoire. Each has become very important in the day to day life of all Canadians (see "The Comeback" by John Ralston Saul). I have represented a local First Nation for the past 10 years in a variety of matters. Because of its unique legal status, almost everything a First Nation does is legally more complicated than it is for the rest of us. I also represent individual Aboriginal Canadians in their various business ventures.Keeping abreast of the changing law and technology in several areas of practice is critical. I enjoy reading about AI and machine learning and the law (Google "ROSS IBM Watson" ). I am active in a number of professional bodies and help organize and speak at many legal conferences. I maintain an active blog.Like most lawyers, I am interested in my community. I like to get involved deeply with one or two organizations at a time. It's not in my profile, but I have run in all but one of the Father's Day Fun Run for Prostate Cancer since its inception 11 years ago. My wife, Noreen, and my four children have all joined me at various times at the run. Our family dog, Mila, has been the reigning "Top Dog" in the Fun Run since dogs were allowed to join the rest of the family three years ago.
