Senior Radiation Surveyor
As a Radiation Protection Surveyor, I provided routine radiological hazard assessments and environmental assays for a large research particle accelerator and cyclotron as well as several medical isotope production cyclotron facilities. I assisted health physicists in taking non-routine radiological measurements and sample assays. I assayed radioactive samples and analyzed the spectra to identify radioisotopes, both gamma and alpha emitters as well as tritium containing oils, water, and unknown residues. I administered Advanced Radiation Protection Training to incoming new employees to become certified as Nuclear Energy Workers in twice annual group classes and provide regular one on one refresher practical training to all Nuclear Energy Workers on site. I signed and approved intra organizational work permits which are required for all radiological work under defined criteria taking place on site. Additionally, outside the scope of work permitting I assisted staff with routine and non-routine radiological assessments and recommend appropriate hazard controls based on the information gathered and known historical or simulated hazard data. I assisted with personnel and surface decontamination incidents and attend and investigate site radiation monitor alarms. I additionally had document controller responsibilities where I maintained group records both on paper and electronically as well as update, author, and review group procedure and management documents. I maintained and calibrated analog pencil and electronic dosimeters which are the most frequently used method of monitoring individual worker radiation dose on site in defined radiation exclusion zones. I was heavily involved in the processing, record keeping and procedure development for the sites radiological waste. Primarily with reviewing and overseeing the metal recycling program for aged and decayed low active impacted metal, and compactable radioactive laboratory waste.
Security Guard
As a Security Guard gained experience working with members of the public from all walks of life, utilizing excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills. Additionally, I gained experience acting as an OFA 2 attendant on site serving a busy 600 room hotel guest and staff.
Safety Technician
As a Safety Technician, I traveled throughout the lower mainland and either individually or as part of a small team, removed and decontaminated a variety of hazardous objects and substances from residential commercial, and industrial locations (including but not limited to biohazardous materials and drug paraphernalia). I also helped implement a computerized inventory tracking system for company equipment and materials.
Laboratory Analyst
As a Laboratory Analyst I prepared and analyzed samples using the NIOSH 9002 and EPA/600/R-04/004 analytical methods. I analyzed air cassettes using phase contrast microscopy following the NIOSH 7400 procedure. I wrote detailed analytical reports using Microsoft Office software, predominantly using Word and Excel. I prepared and analyzed regular quality control samples and maintained a passing record with the American Industrial Hygiene Association IHPAT and BAPAT proficiency testing programs. I took bulk asbestos samples from residential and commercial buildings following AHERA protocol and WorkSafeBC guidelines. My responsibilities covered both laboratory analysis and preparation and office administration duties. I entered data into the laboratory database, I received samples and payments from clients and answered both general and technical inquiries in person and over the phone to a variety of stakeholders.I maintained the company health and safety program; I ensured laboratory practices met regulatory requirements and I sought ways of implementing industry best practices in both safety and laboratory quality control in a cost efficient but effective way.
