When I used to work in an elementary school, I was on the Student Study Team, where teachers referred kids for concerns about their learning. I don't remember the student's name from one of our team meetings; I do remember that he was five years old, couldn't count to 100 or recite the alphabet, and had trouble paying attention in class. What he could do was build a 3D model of anything from a regular piece of 8.5" x 11" paper. He would cut it into the shapes that, when folded like origami but taped, would become a truck or a car. They had steering wheels and bumpers and dashboards and tires. In the "SST Meeting", I pondered this boy's future: Would he spend 13 years (minimum) with daily reminders that he's a failure because of his lack of skills in reading, writing and math? Though I never ended up working with him (he changed schools), I’ll never forget him. He's just one boy—a one in a million boy, for sure—but there are millions like him who need our help.
