I lead the contaminated land division in Bristol. My role is varied and includes project management as well as providing advice for our clients on contaminated land, material management and waste management.We provide Phase I and Phase II investigations for land and property developers as well as Remediation Strategies, Material Management Plans and assistance with liaising with relevant regulators. I help our clients navigate through planning and the varied and sometimes complex legislation requirements as part of the Contaminated Land regime.As part of this role I am a member of Land Team Quality Group and Mental Health First Aiders team. I am the office Health and Safety Co-Ordinator and I co-lead TRC UK Women's Network.

My role was based within the permitting and compliance team at RPS. I managed projects where I applied for or varied environmental permits for our clients. This includes industrial installations, waste and greenhouse gas permits. In addition to permitting I also provided technical support for compliance including writing environmental management systems, managing environmental monitoring and Best Available Techniques(BAT). I collaborated with other environmental departments in RPS assisting with waste classification, through my experience within the remediation industry and waste training including HazWasteOnline. This included regular waste classification for an inert landfill. I also worked with the geo-environmental team to provide assistance with material management. I advised clients on their options to ensure they were compliant with regulations as waste can be a confusing and expensive issue. I wrote material management plans and undertook regular audits throughout a project to ensure compliance with the MMP.

I had a varied role on a range of projects including material management at a former quarry, technical project management of remediation of former oil depot, site investigation design and implementation at a large basement excavation in central London. I provided technical advice at tender stage, project management during live jobs and ensured regulatory compliance was evidenced with verification reports at project sign off stage. My role included remediation design which meant I interpreted data, identify gaps and designed additional investigation when required. I was responsible for obtaining environmental permits before a project commenced and ensuring all work was undertaken in accordance with environmental and waste regulations. This required strong technical understanding of the project as well as liaison with site teams to ensure work was practical as well as compliant with regulations. I was responsible for waste classification of soils, advising on waste to clients and obtaining waste exemptions where appropriate. I liaised with local authorities, regulators and clients to ensure projects were delivered on time and in accordance with environmental regulations and health and safety requirements.

I was involved with all stages of the remediation process, during tendering I analysed and interpret all available scientific data in order to design a conceptual site model. When further information was required I carried out site investigations and used data gathered to form a more complete picture of soils and groundwater. For example I carried out a site investigation within the turbine halls and boiler house Battersea Power Station. This work involved a number of logistical challenges which needed to be overcome including stringent health and safety requirements, limited accessibility and a tight time frame. The site investigation then informed the further work which was successfully carried out on site.When projects were live I was involved in making sure sites were compliant with our mobile treatment permit and remediation strategy. I provided guidance to more junior members of the technical team around environmental monitoring, sample taking and lab procurement, I also ensured all records are being correctly maintained. This enabled progress of a project to be reported and tracked throughout the lifetime of a job, which gave confidence to the client and regulators. I also communicated with sensitive stakeholders including local residents in order to minimise the impacts our works had on the local community. At the end of a project I compiled and analysed data to form a completion report which enabled regulatory sign off for the client, this was an iterative process with involvement with consultants and local authorities.

I was mainly involved in an extremely contaminated former tar works which exposed me to a number of challenges. These included air quality issues which resulted in managing environmental monitoring being one of my key roles to ensure that the health of workers and residents were protected. This involved weekly communication of data and analysis of monitoring to the client and local authority. As each section of works were completed I organised soil sampling to validate the works carried out. Once the data was collected I carried out an analysis of betterment which formed part of the completion report used to discharge planning conditions relating to contaminated land at the site.

The role involved writing due diligence reports for residential property transactions. Analysed historical maps using GIS in order to decide whether there was a significant possibility of significant harm (SPOSH) from former or current land uses. The role also involved disseminating the findings of reports to clients who needed further assistance. Additionally, communicating with local authorities and other stakeholders in order to gain further information on a site's history.

Role involved working with the contaminated land and hydrogeology team in a variety of different tasks. When in the office including I wrote desk studies and factual reports. I also created a number of GIS maps for site investigation plans, contaminant plumes and for designations of new SPZs. On site I undertook gas and water monitoring at a dry cleaning site where the groundwater was contaminated with DNAPL. I also took part in soil verification sampling at a remediated site which formed part of a verification report to discharge planning conditions.
